    About the NDVI Animation
These animated maps show satellite-estimated vegetation "greenness" across the Mid-Atlantic region for the “start of season” date, which was calculated from satellite greenness at a single location in the Shenandoah National Park. The green bars in the chart indicate dates of “start of season,” “maximum greenness,” and “end of season” for a single pixel located in the region that were derived from daily satellite measurements of greenness (note the black trace line).

Typically the northernmost and high elevation vegetation “greens up” later than southerly and low elevation vegetation. The annual start of season across the years varies with temperature and precipitation.
