Web Map Services (WMS) are a simple way of sharing and accessing geospatial data served by web
mapping applications like USGS's The National Map. The USGS has several national servers that provide USGS data as Web Map Services. Web Map services can be used in your own web mapping application
or added to desktop applications.
To search by a specific map layer, try the "Map Information" link above the scale bar in The National Map viewer. It contains a long list of data layers provided by the USGS and there sources.
The EGSC is currently working on several web mapping applications. In the future some of the
information and functionality in these applications may be available as services for use in external web mapping application. If you are interested in or
have suggestions for web map services provided by EGSC please contact Paul Hearn.
