Web Map Services

What Are Web Map Services

Web Map Services (WMS) are a simple way of sharing and accessing geospatial data served by web mapping applications like USGS's The National Map. The USGS has several national servers that provide USGS data as Web Map Services. Web Map services can be used in your own web mapping application or added to desktop applications.

USGS WMS Servers

Below is a short list of popular USGS servers that provide USGS data layers in applications like The National Map and Seamless Data Server

Seamless Data Server http://seamless.usgs.gov
The National Map - http://nmviewogc.cr.usgs.gov
The National Atlas - http://imsref.cr.usgs.gov
National Hydrography Dataset - http://nhdgeo.usgs.gov
National Elevation Dataset - http://imselev.cr.usgs.gov
TNM Best Practices - http://bpgeo.cr.usgs.gov

To find more servers that provide USGS data as a WMS, please use the Mapdex search engine (Server Keyword = USGS)
To search by a specific map layer, try the "Map Information" link above the scale bar in The National Map viewer. It contains a long list of data layers provided by the USGS and there sources.
Lastly, you can use the USGS Geospatial One Stop as a comprehensive search catalog.

EGSC Custom WMS Resources

The EGSC is currently working on several web mapping applications. In the future some of the information and functionality in these applications may be available as services for use in external web mapping application.
